6 People Injured When Car Hits Forever 21 Store In Herald Square

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- An out-of-control car crashed onto the sidewalk and into the Forever 21 store in Herald Square Wednesday night, ramming into people walking by and leaving six people injured.

The accident happened while the area was especially busy with holiday shoppers. And as CBS2's Tony Aiello reported, it all turned into a nightmare on 34th Street just east of the Macy's flagship store.

Around 10 p.m., the Ford Mustang jumped the curb in front of the Forever 21 store at 50 W. 34th St., and then went into the building, police told CBS2. The car hit several vehicles and pedestrians before smashing into the front of the building.

One witness told CBS2's Aiello that one of the injured victims was pinned between the car and the window of the store. The witness said a woman at the wheel suddenly started driving crazily, and the sight created havoc.

"She must have freaked out. She backed up, took off, went around on the other side of the street, went through the intersection, skidded out, fishtailed, then fishtailed again the other way and smacked into all the cars waiting at the light on that side of the street," said witness Matty Thomas. "Cut across, she jumped the curb, and literally five bodies flying in the air."

Four or five vehicles were involved in the accident. Six people were taken to Bellevue Hospital in serious condition, but not with life-threatening injuries, police said.

Police late Wednesday were on the scene talking to witnesses and reconstructing the accident.
