2 Baby Jesus Figurines Stolen In 1 Night In Rockaway Township, N.J.

ROCKAWAY TOWNSHIP, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Two figurines of the Baby Jesus were stolen on the same night in Rockaway Township, New Jersey, and one was still missing as of Friday.

As CBS2's Christine Sloan reported, Elaine Romito said someone stole the Baby Jesus figurine that was in a cradle on the front lawn of her home in Rockaway Township.

"It's either a very mean prank or somebody trying to make a statement," Romito said. "Some people are bothered perhaps that Baby Jesus was put out early. I guess some people put the Baby Jesus out on Christmas or Christmas Eve. Or it could be somebody that just doesn't agree with keeping Christ in Christmas."

Romito said she is certain the Baby Jesus disappeared sometime after 9 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, because when she came out her the next morning it was gone.

Leonor Falcone, who lives on the other side of town, said a Baby Jesus from her Christmas display also went missing the night of Dec. 4. Her Baby Jesus was returned after police found the figurine in a park.

Falcone said she also had a Baby Jesus stolen eight to 10 years ago.

"To be truthful, I would have rather gotten the first one back, because we had that one since we were first married," Falcone said.

Romito said she has had her Baby Jesus for 22 years.

"We're hoping that somebody is going to return Jesus," she said. "We're hoping that we don't have to order a new one. We want our Jesus back."

Romito said she will not ask any questions of the Grinch who tried to steal her Christmas.

Police have not commented on the cases.
