Police Officials: Mayor de Blasio To Meet With Protest Group Angry About Garner Decision

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio was set to meet Wednesday with a group of protesters who are calling for change in city policies following the Eric Garner apparent chokehold death and subsequent grand jury decision.

Protesters from the group Justice League NYC were planning to meet with the mayor on Wednesday, police officials told 1010 WINS.

The criminal justice reform advocacy group is composed of activists, artists, and ex-felons, among others, according to a New York Times report. The group has been protesting every day since a Staten Island grand jury earlier this month declined to indict NYPD Officer Daniel Pantaleo in Garner's apparent chokehold death, the newspaper reported.

The group wants Pantaleo fired and wants to end the "broken windows" policing strategy in which officers target enforcement on smaller crimes so as to prevent more serious ones, the newspaper reported.

Police Commissioner Bill Bratton said he has not spoken to the mayor about the planned meeting. But Patrolmen's Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch said the mayor should not meet with Justice League NYC until the activists "publicly denounce the individuals who assaulted police officers or who have attempted to incite violence during these protests."

Police have said some protests on the Garner decision and other incidents nationwide involving officers have spun out of control. The NYPD on Tuesday announced a $12,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of seven suspects, in connection with a clash between protesters and police on the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday.

A video posted to YouTube shows the assault on NYPD lieutenants Philip Chan and Patrick Sullivan during demonstrations against the Eric Garner grand jury decision.

Chan suffered a broken nose, police said. Both lieutenants had bruising all over their bodies, Burrell reported.

As CBS2 Political Reporter Marcia Kramer reported, police on Tuesday released enhanced photographs of the suspects -- four men and three women. An additional suspect was added Tuesday to the six suspects pointed the day before.

Police said two of the men were in the group ere the key aggressors and face felony charges of assaulting a police officer. The other five were expected to face lesser charges.

Baruch College professor Eric Linsker, has already been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.
