SPCA: Reward Offered After Dog Found Abandoned In Cage On Long Island

BRENTWOOD, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- The Suffolk County SPCA is investigating after a dog was found abandoned inside a cage on the side of the road in Brentwood.

The male Silky/Yorkie terrier-type dog was found Sunday on Candlewood Road. He was covered in feces and urine and was extremely matted, the SPCA said.

The pup was brought to a 24-hour veterinary hospital where veterinarians determined he was emaciated and had open sores on his body, officials said.

"The normal weight should be about 10 to 12 pound for that particular breed," Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross told 1010 WINS. "The dog's weight was 4.6 pounds."

The SPCA said the dog was near death and needed aggressive medical attention to save its life.

"This wasn't short-term. It was neglected to the point that it got in that condition and was just thrown onto the side of the road like it was yesterday's garbage and it's something that will not be tolerated," Gross said.

The SPCA is offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case. Anyone with information is asked to call the Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722.
