Black, Latino Police Groups Hold Vigil For Murdered NYPD Officers

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Members of black and Latino police organizations honored the memories of officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu Sunday night during a prayer vigil.

As WCBS 880's Jim Smith reported, they sang, prayed and deemed the corner where the shooting took place hallowed ground.

"We are officers of color who came to show our respect to Detective Ramos and Detective Liu," said Anthony Miranda with the Latino Officers Association.

Miranda said the vigil was all about the memories of the fallen officers.

"Without any of the politics, without any of the political nonsense that goes on," he said. "This is out of respect to the officers and their families."

"These officers paid that ultimate sacrifice -- what every law enforcement officer knows that they may have to pay whenever they have to put on their uniform," he said.

The group also added to the huge array of flowers and candles at the makeshift memorial.

Ramos and Liu were killed on Dec. 20 by a lone gunman as they sat in their patrol car on the corner of Myrtle Avenue and Tompkins Avenue in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.
