Police Union President Thanks Supporters In Wake Of Shooting Deaths

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- While police have been the targets of vitriol nationwide in recent weeks, one of New York's police unions released a statement Sunday expressing its thanks to those who have shown their supports for officers.

"Those of us who wear the blue of the NYPD have experienced love, support and respect in many forms from people from all over the nation, but none means more to us than the slight smile and nod of the head we have been receiving from New Yorkers as we patrol our city's streets doing the job we love," said Patrick Lynch, president of the Patrolmen's Benevolent Association. "To those who demonstrate their support for the job we do with a nod and smile, we say thank you, it means a great deal to us."

The comments come a little more than a week after two officers -- Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu -- were fatally shot in their squad car in Brooklyn by a gunman vowing revenge for the police-involved killings of Michael Brown and Eric Garner. Ramos was laid to rest Saturday.

"To those who have made donations in support of the families and to all of those who have dropped by local station houses with flowers, candles and a kind word, we say thank you," Lynch said. "And to the tens of thousands of police officers, sheriffs, state troopers and law enforcement officers who traveled from all over the country and Canada, we say we cannot adequately express our appreciation for your loyalty and support.

"The acts of kindness, both small and grand, and the appreciation from those that we risk our lives to protect is a clear indication that the lives and deaths of police officers Ramos and Liu had and will have great meaning."
