Bratton Makes Call For Respect Ahead Of Funeral For Officer Wenjian Liu
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Mourners of a New York Police Department officer killed with his partner in an ambush shooting will gather at a Brooklyn funeral home for his wake.
Officer Wenjian Liu will be remembered Saturday at Aievoli Funeral Home. A Chinese ceremony Sunday led by Buddhist monks will precede a traditional police ceremony with eulogies. Burial will follow at Cypress Hills Cemetery.
Liu and his partner Rafael Ramos were killed Dec. 20 as they sat in their patrol car on a Brooklyn street. Shooter Ismaaiyl Brinsley then killed himself.
The killings raised emotions in the already tense national debate over police conduct.
In a letter to department members, NYPD Commissioner Bill Bratton made a call for respect.
Bratton noted how some officers turned their backs on Mayor Bill de Blasio during a funeral for Ramos.
He said this 'stole the honor and attention' that belonged to Ramos.
Bratton did not threaten disciplinary action, but reminded officers of the 'honor and decency' that go along with their uniform.
Liu, 32, had been married only two months before he was killed. His funeral was delayed because relatives traveled from China.
Ramos was buried last week.
