Cliffside Park Officer Fatally Struck By SUV Laid To Rest

CLIFFSIDE PARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- A funeral was held Saturday for a New Jersey police officer killed in the line of duty.

Hundreds of police officers and mourners attended the church service for Cliffside Park Special Officer Stephen Petruzzello.

According to the Record of Woodland Park, officers from departments across the region attended the service at Epiphany Roman Catholic Church. State Sen. Paul Sarlo and Bergen County Executive James Tedesco were also in attendance.

Sen. Cory Booker joined mourners on Friday night at Petruzzello's wake.

Petruzzello was fatally struck by an SUV while on patrol with his partner just over a week ago. The driver claimed she didn't see the officers and was issued several citations.

As a special officer, Petruzzello could make arrests but did not carry a gun. He graduated from the academy only a month before the crash and was posthumously promoted to full-time officer.

His partner, another special officer, was injured in the crash but is expected to survive.
