Police Initially Say Officer Fell Out Of Vehicle That Wasn't In Motion

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A police officer was seriously hurt after flying off a moving patrol car in Brooklyn, and on Monday night, surveillance video told a very different story than was first provided by the department.

As CBS2’s Tony Aiello reported, it all happened a block from the 70th Precinct stationhouse in Kensington, and the incident has been the talk of the neighborhood.

“I don’t know what would possess someone to do that, especially an officer of the law,” said Richard Condina of Kensington.

The talk of the video, distributed by JPUpdates.com, has also gone well beyond the neighborhood. The video has gone viral, showing the officer sprawled across the hood of a police car.

The officer is seen tumbling to the ground when the police car stops. An officer walking nearby seems stunned when he realizes what happened.

CBS2 is told it was all some kind of horseplay that got out of hand. People who saw the video all reacted with disbelief.

“It’s shocking – I mean, I’ve never seen anything like that before,” one woman who saw the video said.

“You’d think police officers would know better than to do that,” another said.

It all happened just before 8 a.m. Monday at Parkville Avenue and Seton Place. The intersection was closed for hours while investigators worked the scene.

Sources said the officer who was driving, and the officer who was injured, were likely to be written up on departmental charges.

Investigators also wanted to know about some initial confusion over just what happened. The incident was originally reported as an officer falling out of a vehicle that was not in motion, CBS2 reported.

But the surveillance video indicated a different story.

The injured officer was taken to Lutheran Medical Center with a head injury. He was expected to recover.
