North Hempstead Supervisor: Residents Worried About Planned Westbury Gambling Parlor
WESTBURY, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- North Hempstead's supervisor is calling for Nassau Regional Off-Track Betting to solicit public input before moving forward with plans to open a gambling hall in Westbury.
The proposed site of the mini-casino at the former Fortunoff store on Old Country Road is a stone's throw from North Hempstead.
Town Supervisor Judi Bosworth told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall she has received hundreds of letters from residents who are concerned about the possibility of traffic and increased crime.

"This was proposed during the Christmas week leading into New Year's," Bosworth said. "And the concern is that by the time you turn around, it's going to be over and done."
OTB announced last month it had chosen the vacant store in The Source mall for the gambling parlor, which would include up to 1,000 slot machines and table games. It could open sometime in 2015.
OTB officials said the project would create 200 jobs and they're confident it will receive significant community support after all the details are made public.
Westbury Mayor Peter Cavallaro said last month the plan must be approved by the state, but would not be subject to local zoning boards.
