Red Bulls Coaching Shakeup: Mike Petke Out, Jesse Marsch In

HARRISON, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Mike Petke is out as the coach of the New York Red Bulls.

The Major League Soccer team announced on Wednesday that Petke would not return for the 2015 season despite leading the team to the playoffs in each of his two seasons and the league's best regular-season record in 2013.

Kristian Dyer of Metro was the first to report Petke's ouster.

Former Montreal Impact head coach Jesse Marsch was named as Petke's replacement.

"I'm honored to be joining a franchise like the New York Red Bulls and I want to thank the organization for this opportunity," Marsch said in a statement. "I'm excited to get going with our players and sporting staff as we prepare for the 2015 season."

The move came two weeks after Ali Curtis was hired to replace Andy Roxburgh as the team's sporting director.

"On behalf of the New York Red Bulls, I'd like to welcome Jesse aboard as our new head coach," Curtis said. "We're excited to bring someone on who has both MLS and US Men's National Team coaching experience and we strongly believe he is the right candidate to lead our team going forward."

Petke played in the MLS from 1998-2010, starting with the New York MetroStars and finishing with the Red Bulls. He joined the Red Bulls front office after retiring, became an assistant a year later and the coach in 2013 after serving time as interim coach. The Red Bulls won the Supporters' Shield trophy in 2013 for the best record.
