Customers Upset After Burglars Strike Bank In Bayside, Queens

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A burglary at a bank in Queens late last month has left customers furious.

Police told CBS2 several suspects staged a Christmas Day heist at the Flushing Bank branch at 42-11 Bell Blvd. in Bayside, Queens.

An unknown number of perpetrators entered the rear of a neighboring vacant storefront and broke through the wall into the bank, police sources said. The suspects then used unknown tools to cut through the vault ceiling, where they looted multiple safe deposit boxes, sources said.

The safe deposit cases contained tens of thousands of dollars' worth of cash and valuables.

"A lot of jewelry -- a lot of jewelry is gone," said customer Neela Amam. "And these boxes, they're empty. They recovered some things, but a lot of them are empty."

The break-in was not discovered until 9:30 a.m. Dec. 26, when the bank reopened, sources said. Police investigated and found that the burglar alarm was bypassed, but cameras was operational, sources said.

Customers said their safe deposit boxes were not insured.

The bank did not respond to requests for comment.
