OLD BRIDGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) — An elderly New Jersey man who allegedly was armed with a knife was shot and killed during a confrontation with police as they tried to quell a domestic disturbance.
Old Bridge police were called to the Cedar Grove Place home shortly before 6 a.m. Wednesday, Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said.
Talbot Schroeder, 75, of Old Bridge, appeared distraught and allegedly had attacked a family member and threatened another relative, Carey said. He also had injured himself with a knife, authorities said.
The officers tried to calm Schroeder and repeatedly told him to drop the knife, but he refused, and one of the officers eventually fired one shot, authorities said. Schroeder was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 6:30 a.m.
The name of the officer who fired the shot has not been disclosed.
A large kitchen knife was recovered at the scene, NJ.com reported. The relative who was attacked was not seriously hurt, the report said.
