Report: Jets Eyeing Dolphins' Rodgers For Defensive Coordinator

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The Jets have a lot of problems, but their defensive line isn't one of them.

So it should come as no surprise that new head coach Todd Bowles is likely going to bring in someone fluent with the trenches as the team's new defensive coordinator.

According to the Daily News, that man will be Miami defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers. The Jets' previous line coach, the popular and successful Karl Dunbar, joined Rex Ryan's staff in Buffalo.

The Jets went 4-12 in 2014, their fourth straight season out of the playoffs, but their defensive line was widely regarded as one of the best in the NFL. It's hard to argue when you consider the unit is anchored by Pro Bowl end Sheldon Richardson and features stud end Muhammad Wilkerson. Another important piece, nose tackle Damon Harrison, is a restricted free agent.

Rodgers and Bowles worked together in Dallas from 2005-07 and in Miami from 2008-11.

If Rodgers does get the job he will be tasked with finding a solution in the secondary, where the Jets struggled mightily last season. Though they received surprising play from cornerback Marcus Williams, the Jets will need their recent first round picks, corner Dee Milliner and safety Calvin Pryor, to emerge, and will be relying on new general manager Mike Maccagnan to be aggressive in free agency.

The new defensive coordinator will also inherit a linebacking corps in need of a retooling. Veterans David Harris and Calvin Pace may not be retained, Jason Babin has a year left on his deal but could be a cap casualty and Demario Davis struggled to make a consistent impact during his second NFL season.
