Expert Weighs In After Video Of Truck Losing Control On Icy New Jersey Turnpike Goes Viral

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Video of a tractor-trailer barreling down an icy New Jersey Turnpike has gone viral and an expert is sharing some advice on what you should do if you find yourself in a similar situation.

The shocking cellphone video left the person behind the camera uninjured, but with an experience he'll never forget.

"I was right in the path of danger," driver Oleg Varavko, 27, told CBS2 Monday.

Varavko was on the New Jersey Turnpike in New Brunswick when a tractor trailer blocking the roadway in front of him forced him to stop.

As he waited for traffic to clear, another tractor trailer lost control behind him, slid across three lanes and came straight toward him.

The incident happened around 7:30 a.m. Sunday, when the roads were covered in black ice.

Varavko was lucky to walk away unscathed with the incredible video, said Robert Sinclair Jr. of AAA New York.

"That was one of the most treacherous situations a driver could find themselves in," Sinclair told CBS2's Valerie Castro.

Sinclair said Varavko did the right thing by staying inside his car.

"The best thing to do is stay in the vehicle," Sinclair said. "The vehicle has safety systems to protect you in the event of a crash. You've got crumple zones at the front and rear, air bags, hopefully your seatbelt is on."

Sinclair said the worst thing you can do is panic.

"Try to remain calm, try to remain relaxed, let the vehicle systems work to protect you," Sinclair said.

If you can, Sinclair said avoid the roadways completely during bad weather.
