Malloy's Transportation Agenda Includes Widening I-84 In Danbury

DANBURY, Conn. (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says that widening a section of Interstate 84 in Danbury is critical for economic growth in the western part of the state.

The Democrat has declared transportation improvements a signature issue for his second term and is expected to provide details of his plan in an address next month to the state Legislature.

At a news conference Thursday in Danbury, Malloy said he will unveil a five-year ramp-up plan with a 25-year construction phase, WCBS 880 Connecticut Bureau Chief Fran Schneidau reported.

"Quite frankly, it is clear that Connecticut underinvested in transportation -- not in a little way, in a gigantic way -- for the better part of two generations," the governor said.

On Malloy's to-do list are widening interstates, overhauling bridges and boosting bus and train service, Schneidau reported.

The Department of Transportation is looking to widen a five-mile section of I-84 in both directions between exits 3 and 8. Malloy said highway congestion makes the state less attractive to businesses and affects quality of life.
