With Storm Approaching, Woman Gives Birth To Baby In Car On Long Island

MANHASSET, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- A woman gave birth to a baby inside a car in Manhasset on Monday, just as a significant winter storm was barreling toward Long Island, police said.

The excited father called police saying the woman was in labor and the baby was coming. Over the phone, ambulance medical technician Lawrence Loiselle talked the man through the delivery and gave him instructions for drying and warming the baby, police said.

"Pretty chaotic at first. When he picked up the phone all you heard him say was that, 'The baby is here. The baby's here,'" Loiselle told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

Loiselle helped calm down the father.

"[I] Told him to take his jacket off, put the child in the jacket to him warm and to turn the heat up in the car so the child stay warm," he said.

The baby boy and mother are doing great, Hall reported.

As 1010 WINS' Darius Radzius reported, this was Loiselle's first time helping someone deliver a baby over the phone.

"Whether you're delivering a child in person or on the phone, hearing that baby cry is always a good sign. Made me feel really good," Loiselle said.

A Nassau County ambulance arrived soon after.

The mother and the baby were transported to a local hospital and are said to be doing fine, authorities said.
