Authority: Newark Airport Passenger Beats Homeless Man With Chair

NEWARK, N.J. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A Guatemalan man faces numerous charges after he allegedly beat a homeless man with a chair at Newark Liberty International Airport.

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey tells NJ.com 29-year-old Leonidas Monroy Sandoval had been at the airport since Thursday night and was acting erratically.

Authority spokeswoman Erica Dumas said Sandoval tried to flee following the attack, which occurred around 4:25 a.m. Saturday, and allegedly threw a chair at Port Authority Police. But he was subdued and charged with aggravated assault, aggravated assault on a police officer and weapons offenses.

It's not clear what, if anything, provoked the attack. The victim was hospitalized with undisclosed injuries.

It wasn't known Saturday if Sandoval has retained an attorney. He also suffered undisclosed injuries in the incident.
