Wegmans Markets Take Jab At Pats, Brady With Deflate Cakes
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) — Wegmans Food Markets is best known in the sports world for its longtime sponsorship of the LPGA.
Turns out the Rochester, New York-based supermarket chain has a sense of humor, too.
Wegmans was selling what it called Tom's Deflate Cakes leading up to Sunday's Super Bowl. One person in Buffalo who shared a photo of the cakes on Twitter said she nearly "died of laughter."
The cakes are a dig at the New England Patriots and quarterback Tom Brady, who are accused of deflating game balls during New England's AFC Championship game win over the Indianapolis Colts.
Dubbed "Deflate-gate," the scandal was one of the main pre-Super Bowl talking points, although no punishment has been handed down so far.
The supermarket display includes a deflated football for context, and the football-shaped cakes are adorned mostly with chocolate frosting — with a little white icing for the stitching.
