NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – New York State Assembly’s first African American speaker joined Saturday morning’s Action Rally.

Carl Heastie joined Rev. Al Sharpton and the National Action Network.

The Bronx assemblyman took over as Speaker after Sheldon Silver resigned following an arrest on federal corruption charges.

“This is a tremendous opportunity for our community, for the first time to have one of us sit at the table,” he said.

Heastie is 47 and was first elected to the assembly in 2000.
