Yankees Radio Announcer Plans Fundraiser To Help Edgewater Fire Victims

EDGEWATER, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Many are still struggling following a fire that destroyed part of an apartment complex in Edgewater, New Jersey last month.

Now, a charity fundraiser is being planned in the form of a celebrity meet and greet in New City, New York.

As 1010 WINS' Rebecca Granet reported, the event will be hosted by Yankees radio announcer John Sterling, who also lost his possessions in the Avalon at Edgewater fire.

"It is a sobering thought when you're on the street and you only have the clothes on your back," Sterling said.

But the fundraiser isn't for Sterling.

"I'm there to raise money for the other displaced families," he said.

The Feb. 26 event at D&D's Bar and Restaurant will include a sports memorabilia auction and a chance to mingle with current and former professional athletes like former New York Yankee Bucky Dent.

"You just want to try and reach out and help as much as you can," Dent said.

Tickets are $50 a piece.
