Couples Get Valentine's Day Surprise In Times Square

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Some couples made Valentine's Day extra special Saturday, saying "yes" to some over-the-top in a spectacular New York fashion.

As CBS2's Ilana Gold reported, marriage proposals popped up every hour on the hour until the early afternoon on signs in Times Square – accompanied by shooting confetti.

Riya Lodhe was one of the recipients of a proposal.

"This is like still, I'm not even to believe – is this a dream, or is this the reality?" said Lodhe, of Jersey City.

Now, Lodhe has a diamond to show off – and plenty to celebrate with her new fiancé, Matesh Gala of Washington, D.C.

"I always had a dream to do something like that, and I did it here," Gala said.

Ricardo Freer brought Alicia Jackson from South Carolina to pop the question in Midtown – on a huge electronic billboard.

"It's very special. I got the ring, finally," said Jackson, of Columbia, South Carolina, adding she had been waiting six years

Freer pointed out that Jackson did indeed say yes.

Gary Winkler of the Times Square Alliance said before the event that the weather Saturday only added to the spirit.

"Based on the forecast which says some light snow, we think it's just going to add to the beauty," he told 1010 WINS. "I think the photos that many of these couples are going to go home with are going to be priceless memories."

The festivities ended with a live performance of "Here I Go" from the Broadway musical "If/Then."

Some people also tied the knot in Times Square Saturday. CBS2 was there as Kim and Maurizio DiLeo died the knot.

They didn't anticipate the frigid temperatures.

"It's freezing… a little cold, but it's nice," Maurizio DiLeo said.

Also Saturday, 100 couples took their vows on the 86th floor observatory at the Empire State Building.
