FRANKLIN , N.J. (CBSNewYork) – Franklin Police in Somerset County say no crime is too small, after catching vandals that allegedly hit mailboxes in the area over the past several months.

“It’s a relatively minor crime, but again, it is a quality of life issue. It’s an annoyance on the fact that now, someone has to go out to purchase a new mailbox,” Sgt. Philip Rizzo told WCBS 880’s Jim Smith.

Rizzo said the vandals struck about 20 mailboxes.

So intent on cracking the case, police dispatched an undercover unit to Old Georgetown Road Thursday, where they caught the vandals red-handed.

“An officer heard what sounded to be a crash of a mailbox breaking,” Rizzo said.

Three suspects, aged 17 to 20, now face criminal mischief charges.
