2 Accused Of Leaving Dog Locked Alone In Unheated Staten Island Apartment For Weeks

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Two people are accused of abandoning a dog in an unheated apartment on Staten Island.

The dog - a 3-year-old pit bull named Jay -- was found locked in a freezing bedroom.

Noel Galvin, 35, is accused of locking Jay in the bedroom of his friend Christina Pardee's apartment without food or water back in mid-January, then she moved in with him and his wife.

The dog wasn't found until Feb. 13, when prosecutors said Pardee admitted what happened. By the time Jay was discovered, he was emaciated with his bones protruding, 1010 WINS' Roger Stern reported.

Galvin's wife, Heather, told Stern that he didn't know what to do after the dog had eaten poison ivy and couldn't stay in their house.

"He was just out of his mind trying to figure out how to get him help. He was just overwhelmed with it," she said. "And just thought and reacted on impulse, and you can't do that."

Galvin claimed he tried to give the dog back to the person who gave it to him, but they never came.

The ASPCA is now caring for Jay, and officials said it's too soon to discuss his adoption prospects.

Galvin -- a convicted felon - and Pardee are both charged with animal cruelty and other crimes.

Galvin is being held on Riker's Island.
