Homeowner Stabbed After Confronting Suspect In Brick Break-In

BRICK, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- Police are looking for a man who they said stabbed a homeowner during a burglary in New Jersey.

It happened around 4 p.m. Saturday near Stephen and Burnt Tavern roads in Brick Township.

The homeowner, Jerry Flynn, told CBS2's Tracee Carrasco that his house was broken into last August, so when he arrived home on Saturday to find someone trying to break in again, he had to do something.

Surveillance video from Flynn's neighbor across the street shows Flynn pulling his truck into the driveway. He gets out, checks the mail, and spots the suspect hiding in the bushes.

"This fellow was coming out the side of the property carrying a bag that I thought was mine, because it looked like an item that came from the house," Flynn said.

The homeowner confronted the suspect and that's when they started fighting.

"We got into a scuffle down on the other end there and believe it or not a neighbor that I know came by and said he didn't want to get involved and left so we kept fighting," Flynn said.

Part of the brawl took place out of view of the surveillance cameras.

"This is where I started getting and advantage over him and getting him pretty good, and he took the sharpest screwdriver he had and stabbed it in me, and that's when I said enough," he said.

Flynn said the suspect stabbed him in the leg. He limped back into his truck and started to chase the suspect.

"I called 911 thinking alright we got him, we'll catch him down the street somewhere, thinking he's just running, but I didn't know that he stashed his car," Flynn said.

The suspect fled in a dark-colored sport utility vehicle with partial New Jersey license plate number Y8L, police said.

Police now say this suspect could be responsible for other break-ins that same day, including an attempt at Flynn's neighbor's home.

Flynn is now recovering from his injury and said he wasn't going to go down without a fight.

"He wasn't getting away, but he did," Flynn said.

The suspect is described by police as a white male in his late 20s with a thin build and between 5-foot-7 and 5-foot-9.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Barnes at (732)262-4611 or call the main police number at (732) 262-1100.
