Nassau County Officials Seek Public's Help In Solving Murder, Gas Station Robberies

JERICHO, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- Officials are launching a new campaign to catch a man wanted in connection with a murder and a string of gas station robberies in Nassau County.

Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano called the suspect an animal.

The suspect shot and killed a BP gas station attendant on Jericho Turnpike in Jericho on Jan. 28, police said. He is also wanted for 10 gas station robberies that occurred in Westbury, Hicksville and Jericho between Dec. 20 and Feb. 8.

In each incident, the suspect demanded money at gunpoint and stole Newport cigarettes before running off on foot, police said.

Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $35,000 -- $25,00 for the murder and $10,000 for the robberies -- for information "to bring this cold blooded killer to justice," Mangano said.

Mangano and police brass unveiled a large billboard on wheels that will visit neighborhoods, pleading for information and publicizing the reward.

"It's our belief that someone in the community knows who this individual is and we're seeking the public's help," Acting Police Commissioner Thomas Krumpter said.

Crime Stoppers is asking anyone with information to call 800-244-TIPS (8477).

"We don't want people to feel that because it's getting notoriety that they shouldn't call. Don't hesitate, please continue to call us," Police Chief Kevin Smith said. "Call that number, give us any shred of information that you might have and it may be helpful."
