NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – For it’s beautiful parks, it’s no surprise 14 percent of New York City’s landmass is devoted to city parks.

But parks advocate Geoffrey Croft tells 1010 WINS’ Gary Baumgarten there are only a little more than 200 parks enforcement officers to patrol 30,000 acres.

Croft said it’s time the city gets them some help.

“The mayor’s budget right now that he just announced last month, his preliminary budget, only allocates a fraction of the funds the parks department needs overall to do its job,” Croft said.

Newly-released crime statistics show that for the last two quarters of last year, there were more than 90 assaults, 180 robberies, seven rapes and one murder in New York City parks.
