Collins And Fred Wilpon Meet After Loss, But Manager Insists Owner Isn't 'Mad'
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- According to multiple reports, Mets owner Fred Wilpon met with manager Terry Collins in the skipper's office at Tradition Field for roughly 20 minutes on Monday afternoon.
New York had just lost to the Marlins, 13-2.
"He just wanted to talk about the club, which he loves to do," Collins told reporters. "He loves to talk baseball. But he's not mad at all."
Wilpon and Collins discussed the high number of walks the Mets have allowed and the club's struggling lefty relievers, according to reports.
"He likes to come in and just run through the roster," Collins said. "Talk about, 'Hey, what are you looking at right now?' ...He's got great passion. He wants to win so bad … I said, 'Listen, you're going to like what's going to come out of here.' I mapped out the next four days of who's playing and who's not and days off.
"... He asked me about a couple of spots that have been a concern. I said, 'Yeah, they're still a concern. We're going to bear down on those areas.' ... There are positives, but we just have got to stop walking people, especially in spring training games."
According to ESPN's Adam Rubin, the meeting was blown way out of proportion.
"He expects it to be a much better team," Collins said in regard to Wilpon. "There's no doubt about that. He told me two weeks ago, 'Look, I'm going to be here a lot. A lot.' In the past, he'd come in and he'd be gone for a week or 10 days."
