Funeral Set For NJ Woman Tied To NY Serial Killer Mystery

AMITYVILLE, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) - A New Jersey woman who died near where victims of a suspected Long Island serial killer were found is finally being buried.

Family attorney John Ray says Shannan Gilbert's family will gather at New York's Amityville Cemetery on Thursday.

The 24-year-old escort from Jersey City, New Jersey disappeared on May 1, 2010. Her remains were found in December 2011.

She was last seen in a beach community several miles from where 10 others, including at least four prostitutes, were killed.

Police found the other remains while searching for Gilbert. But they believe Gilbert's death is otherwise unrelated to that case.

They've theorized she may have drowned in a marsh. Gilbert's family disputes the police conclusion.

Police have not commented in recent years on the probe.
