De Blasio is hoping parents are as excited about pre-kindergarten as he is.

"The important thing is this: pre-K changes your child's life," the mayor said. "Full-day, high quality pre-K is the right start. It gets your child on the right track educationally. It's free."

Alexis Confer, with the mayor's administration, is encouraging parents to go online to sign up.

"They have an awesome experience where they can go through a pre-K finder, search for different pre-kindergartens in their area -- this is public schools, this is early education centers, a whole swath of options," she said.

Last year, more than 53,000 children were in enrolled in pre-K. The goal this year is to offer 70,000 seats.
