Port Authority Officer Accidentally Shoots Self, Colleague, Police Say

ELIZABETH, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police officer accidentally shot himself and a colleague while cleaning his gun Thursday afternoon, police said.

The incident happened sometime around 3 p.m. at the Port Authority police facility at Port Newark, at 1170 McLester St. in Elizabeth, New Jersey, police told CBS2.

The officer was cleaning the gun when it discharged and he was wounded in the left hand, police said.

The other officer was wounded in the thigh, police said.

Both officers were rushed to an area hospital, and their conditions were reported as stable, police said.

The facility houses the vehicle inspection unit for Port Authority police.
