Community Comes Together For Cleanup Event In Coney Island
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Even with snow on the ground community activists in Coney Island are getting a jump start on spring with a series of community betterment and clean up events.
The 3rd Annual Spring into Action project kicked off Saturday with a street cleaning along Mermaid Avenue.
Outreach manager Christina Reintamm told 1010 WINS Spring into Action also partnered with Million Trees NYC and the New York Restoration Project to give away 100 free trees to New York residents on Sunday.
"We're actually giving away trees to people to plant on their own properties or their own community centers or places of worship," Reintamm said. "We're going to do a garbage cleanup...and we're going to canvas the area to see where graffiti removal is necessary."
And that's not all, organizers are recruiting some 350 volunteers for 18 service projects across Brooklyn.
"We're going to have projects in East New York and Bed-Stuy and Downtown Brooklyn -- all throughout the borough," Reintamm said.
Reintamm added that Spring into Action offers more than just cleanup projects.
"You could read to the kids at our early education centers or you can help adults who are re-entering the job market practice their job interview skills," she said.
