Downtown Brooklyn Gas Leak Prompts Evacuations, Partial Shutdown Of Brooklyn Bridge

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A major gas leak shut down part of the Brooklyn bridge, and forced the evacuation of the federal courthouse in downtown Brooklyn Saturday morning.

The FDNY said a gas leak was broken open at Tillary and Jay streets. Construction crews were to blame, according to the FDNY.

National Grid spokeswoman Wendy Ladd told WCBS 880 that a third-party contractor damaged service to the U.S. District Courthouse at 225 Cadman Plaza.

First responders were at the scene within minutes, and field operations crews secured the service, Ladd said.

The courthouse, which is closed on Saturday, was evacuated, officials said.

No one was injured, Ladd said.

The Brooklyn-bound side of the Brooklyn Bridge was closed for a short period of time due to the leak, but had reopened by just before 11 a.m., officials said.
