Labor Commissioner: NYC Has Saved $400M In Union Health Care Costs
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- Mayor Bill de Blasio's administration said Wednesday that the city has secured $400 million in health care savings from municipal unions.
Labor Commissioner Bob Linn testified in front of the City Council on Wednesday.
The de Blasio administration has struck new labor contracts with more than three-quarters of the city's unions.
As part of those deals, the unions have to find health care savings to offset new expenditures.
In total, the city plans to spend $400 million less in health care costs in the current fiscal year.
Linn said it will continue to increase until it reaches a total of $3.4 billion by Fiscal year 2018.
Some councilmembers expressed skepticism about the plan and said they were concerned that public sector employees would receive fewer benefits.
