Mets Closer Jenrry Mejia Goes On DL With Elbow Inflammation
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) — For the second straight season, the New York Mets' closer hasn't made it past opening day.
But the news could have been much worse.
Jenrry Mejia was put on the 15-day disabled list Tuesday because of inflammation in the back of his elbow. He was examined by Mets medical director Dr. David Altchek, underwent X-ray and MRI scans and was given a cortisone injection.
New York says Mejia won't be available to pitch in a game for at least 10 days and was put on the DL retroactive to Sunday. Right-hander Erik Goeddel will be recalled from Triple-A Las Vegas of the Pacific Coast League before Wednesday night's game at Washington.
Mejia was supposed to enter in the ninth inning Monday of what became a 3-1 victory over the Nationals. But the right-hander felt a problem in the bullpen, and Jerry Blevins relieved and retired Bryce Harper on a flyout leading off the ninth. Buddy Carlyle retired two batters for his first career save.
Mejia, who had Tommy John surgery on his elbow in 2011, went 6-6 with 28 saves last season. Manager Terry Collins said Jeurys Familia might step into the closer role.
Last year, Mets closer Bobby Parnell blew a save on opening day against Washington and was out for the rest of the season after Tommy John surgery.
