Police Await Autopsy Results Of Young Girl Found Unconscious In Croton-On-Hudson

CROTON-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. (CBSNewYork/AP) – Investigators are awaiting the autopsy and toxicology results of a young girl found unconscious at a home with her mother in Croton-on-Hudson over the weekend.

The home on Hastings Avenue is now the center of an investigation into the death of 6-year-old Lacey Carr, CBS2's Ilana Gold reported.

Police said the child's father, David Carr, who doesn't live at the home where the two were found, walked in Easter Sunday and found Lacey unresponsive in a bed next to her mother, 52-year-old Kathleen Dymes. He immediately called 911, police said.

Dymes remains at Phelps Memorial Hospital in critical condition, the hospital said.

Lacey was a first-grader at Carrie Tompkins Elementary School, where counselors are on-hand to help students and staff, Gold reported.

"It's very difficult, it's unbelievable," said parent Lavan Chrelashviln, whose 7-year-old daughter had known Lacey since preschool. "It's going to be very difficult for her because they were good friends."

The district sent a letter telling parents and students about Lacey's death, saying it will have a huge impact on the entire school.

"The district is devastated by the loss of our student," said Assistant Superintendent Deborah O'Connell.

Investigators suspect foul play, CBS2 reported. They don't know what led to the tragedy, but say there were no obvious signs of trauma or carbon monoxide poisoning.

"You know at this point, they will probably do toxicology, and that takes a lot longer," Detective John Nikitopoulos said. "So we may not have any results for a while."

The district attorney's office said it could take weeks to get the toxicology results.

Lacey and her mother lived at the home, which belongs to the child's grandfather. Police said he was home at the time and has been questioned.

The village mayor said the Dymes family has been a mainstay in the community for years.

"Our hearts and prayers go out to all the extended family and all the friends and neighbors as well," Mayor Leo Wiegman said.

Donald, a neighbor, told 1010 WINS' Al Jones it was a quiet Sunday afternoon and he didn't suspect anything was wrong until emergency vehicles came roaring down the street.

"It was a horrendous scene. There was ambulances, cop cars — everything," he said.

Donald said Lacey was a "sweet little thing," WCBS 880's Marla Diamond reported.

"Used to yell over to us all the time. You couldn't help but love her," he said.

Neighbors said Dymes was a former nurse. State records show her license was suspended twice, Gold reported -- once in 2002 for stealing painkillers and again in 2012 for DWI and larceny.
