New Mobile App Helps Families Looking To Adopt A Pet In NYC

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Thinking of adopting a pet in New York City? Well, there's an app for that.

The free iPhone app makes it much easier to adopt a cat, dog or other animal in the city.

"It's an up-to-date list of which animals are available for adoption," Risa Weinstock, executive director of Animal Care & Control of NYC, told 1010 WINS. "As you select a specific animal it will pull up detailed information about their personality, their weight, their size, the type of breed or classification."

The app only provides the official listing of animals available for adoption at the agency's shelters in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island. You cannot adopt an animal using the app.

"It'll give you more information before you decide which animal is right for you to adopt," Weinstock said. "Just looking or thinking is not the same experience as actually meeting the pet. We really encourage people to use the app, find out what we have available, figure out what you might be interested in and then come in, make an appointment, meet with one of our counselors and we'll make a great match for you."
