Police: Riverdale, N.J. Man Steals Friend's Car In Order To Make Court Appearance

RIVERDALE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) --  A New Jersey man's efforts to get to court may land him in jail.

Jorge Ramirez-Sierra, 21, of Riverdale stole his friend's car so he could get to a court appearance in Paterson, according to police.

The friend called police to report his car missing on Friday morning, police said.

The man told officers he thought Ramirez-Sierra had taken the car because he had had told him several times the night before that he didn't know how he would get to Paterson for the court hearing.

While officers were talking with the car's owner, Ramirez-Sierra called to say he was heading back with the vehicle, police said.

When he arrived, police took him into custody. Police found Ramirez-Sierra with a hypodermic needle, a crack pipe, empty wax bags and other drug paraphernalia, along with an open airplane bottle of Fireball whiskey, Lt. James Macintosh told NJ.com.

Ramirez-Sierra was charged with unlawful taking of a means of conveyance, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a hypodermic needle, driving while suspended and having an opening container of alcohol in a motor vehicle, NJ.com reported.

He's due back in court April 15.
