Dermatologist: You Don't Have To Break The Bank To Get Great Skin

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) - Botox, fillers, and other injectable treatments can make your skin look great-- but not your wallet.

As CBS2's Alex Denis reported, it turns out you don't have to spend a lot to make your complexion look fantastic.

Manhattan dermatologist Doris Day has access to some of the best skin care products and treatments on the market, but she says you don't have to break the bank to have beautiful skin.

Dr. Day says great skin starts on the inside with a healthy diet and lifestyle and then benefits greatly from regular cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and wearing sunscreen.

"Just use sunscreen on a daily basis, that will prevent up to 90 percent of wrinkles," she said.

Another essential is retinol. Dr. Day says retinols found in big name brands and available over the counter  have solid science behind them, are effective and affordable.

In her book "Forget the Facelift," Dr. Day recommends facial exercises and spells out the "skin sabotagers" which include ultraviolet rays, either from the sun or from a tanning booth, smoking, salt, excess alcohol, allergens in some beauty products and eating disorders.

Still, she says it's never too late to start the journey toward better skin.

"Your skin rejuvenates every day. It wants to be healthy and beautiful. If we give it the right support, it gets there," Day said.

Dr. Day says over-the-counter products, along with a healthy diet and lifestyle, can make a visible difference in your skin.
