National Weather Service Issues Brush Fire Warning For NYC Area

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) - The National Weather Service has issued a fire warning for the New York City area because of dry brush and gusty winds.

While this weekend may have beautiful weather, it's also the perfect recipe for brush fires, John Tonkin with the New Jersey Forest Fire Service said.

"Your field conditions are already dry and then your weather conditions are actually falling into line. You're going to end up having higher than normal winds," he told WCBS 880's Jim Smith.

He said crews had to battle numerous flare-ups in northern New Jersey this weekend alone.

"Under these types of conditions, we always tell people to use caution," he said.

Authorities say to exercise caution when using outdoor grills. They add that smokers should never carelessly discard cigarettes.

The brush fire warning is in effect from noon until 8 p.m. Saturday.
