NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – Adding recycling barrels to Upper West Side street corners seemed like a good idea, but it hasn’t worked out exactly as planned.

The recycling barrels go inside metal canisters, but for some reason the barrels are ending up outside, WCBS 880’s Peter Haskell reported.

“If they’re left open after a sanitation services them or if somebody was after the bottles,” Andrew Albert of Community Board 7 said.

Albert said he knows what the issue is.

“Clearly they’re not locked and it’s a real problem,” he said.

A sanitation department spokesperson said locking the bins would make collection less efficient.
