Off-Duty NYPD Cop Rescues 2 From SUV In Saw Mill River

YONKERS, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) -- An off-duty NYPD officer jumped into action Monday after an SUV with two women inside plunged into the Saw Mill River.

As 1010 WINS' Al Jones reported, the Saw Mill River in Yonkers is well over its banks, with the occasional duck or goose paddling by. But earlier it was a Toyota SUV sharing the water.

Police said the SUV was heading northbound on the Saw Miller River Parkway just after 1 p.m. when the driver lost control and careened into the river just south of Executive Boulevard.

The SUV stayed afloat, allowing the off-duty officer enough time to help the two Mount Vernon women out of the vehicle and get them to safety.

Neither of the women were injured in the incident.

Police believe the SUV hydroplaned during heavy rain, Jones reported.
