Experts: 'Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge' Is Dangerous And Damaging

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- In the latest social media "challenge," teenagers are attempting to plump their lips in an effort to resemble reality TV star Kylie Jenner.

As CBS2's Jill Nicolini reported, doctors said the #KylieJennerChallenge – as it appears in hashtag form – is a monumentally bad idea and the results are worrisome.

Lexie Chadwick of Destin, Florida videotaped herself doing the challenge by placing her lips into a plastic Gatorade bottle and sucking to create a vacuum.

Afterward, she remarked, "What did I do? I look like a fish."

Chadwick, 16, said she was bored and the challenge looked like fun. Her lips were slightly bruised, and the swelling lasted about three hours.

Dr. Francesca Fusco of Wexler Dermatology in Kips Bay said young women are doing the so-called challenge because plump lips are viewed as being sexy. But it is a very risky undertaking.

"The idea is they're sucking and creating a vacuum, and that vacuum would result in swelling because it's a trauma to the lips, breaking of blood vessels, lacerations, cutting of the skin that requires stitches in some cases. And that can leave marks that include pigmentation; scarring," Fusco said.

One teenager did the challenge and said it was very painful, and she was still suffering three days later.

"It's funny," one young woman said of the trend. "I'd watch it, but I dint think people should be doing it."

As to how the challenge participants' lips look, one young man said they looked "ridiculous," and "not like Kylie Jenner at all."

Francesa said the best idea is to stay away from the Kylie Jenner Lip Challenge.

"I would recommend to teenage girls out there that are considering doing this not to do it," she said. "It is not safe, and can have some serious repercussions."

The good news, Nicolini reported, is that there are safer ways of achieving plumper lips – involving over-the-counter products that can cause slight swelling of the lips when applied directly.

Fusco said the same look can be achieved safely by visiting a dermatologist who can inject fillers

Jenner, 17, issued a tweet about the trend Tuesday afternoon:
