Foot-Long Alligator Spotted In Suffolk County Pond

CENTRAL ISLIP, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – A woman walking near a pond by a courthouse in Central Islip spotted a one-foot-long alligator and called the authorities.

Suffolk County SPCA Chief Roy Gross said someone dumped the alligator in the water and his investigators have been searching for the reptile with no luck.

"One of my officers actually donned what they call a dry suit and actually went into the water trying to capture the alligator, and his thermometer registers 37 degrees. This type of reptile certainly cannot survive in these type of temperatures," Gross told WCBS 880's Sophia Hall.

He said the problem has grown over the last few years. People have been dumping alligators on Long Island because the buy them on the internet and after a while, cannot handle the reptiles anymore.

"We've had cases where people were bitten. At that point I assume they're taking them and just abandoning them," he said.
