FDNY Invites Public For Tours Of Stations To Mark 150th Anniversary
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- New York City is wishing the Fire Department of New York a happy 150th birthday this weekend.
On Saturday afternoon, Mayor Bill de Blasio joined Fire Commissioner Daniel Nigro and members of the FDNY at an open house event at the Engine 58/Ladder 26 station on Fifth Avenue.
To mark the special occasion, the fire department is offering free tours of its firehouses in each borough.
"We want them to celebrate with us. We want to show them what it is we do," Commissioner Nigro told 1010 WINS. "We want to welcome them into our fire house -- our home. We want to show them what a great job it is."
Attendees will get a chance to meet their local firefighters, see the tools and equipment they use and more.
De Blasio said he felt the tours were a "powerful" way to celebrate the anniversary.
"When that bond is there, when the community has a chance to get to know the firefighters individually and the firefighters get the chance to know the community residents, it makes the whole situation better for everyone," he said.
