Local Plastic Surgery Clinic Accused Of Refusing To Treat Patient With HIV

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- The U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan is suing a plastic surgery clinic, saying it refuses to treat patients with HIV.

As WCBS 880's Alex Silverman reported, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara said a patient went to Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York last July for a consultation.

When he told Dr. Emmanuel Asare he was HIV positive, the surgeon allegedly told him it is the policy of the practice not to serve people with HIV, cancer, or diabetes.

Advanced Cosmetic Surgery of New York, which is registered under the business name Springfield Medical Aesthetic, was accused of violating the Americans with Disabilities Act.

WCBS 880 called the office, but the person who answered the phone said no one was available to comment.

Bharara said anyone who feels that a doctor or other provider is not serving people with disabilities can contact his office's civil rights unit.
