Bullet Strikes Window At Day Care Center In East Orange

EAST ORANGE, N.J. (CBSNewYork) -- A bullet went flying into the window at a day care center with children inside in East Orange, New Jersey Thursday.

As CBS2's Tracee Carrasco reported, the children were all safe after the incident at One Step Ahead Learning Center, at 30 Morton Pl. in East Orange.

The bullet struck a window adjacent to the cafeteria around lunchtime. It did not do any damage beyond the window and did not strike anyone, Carrasco reported.

But a child who attends the day care center said there were children in the cafeteria at the time.

Parents said they were alerted by phone from the school about the bullet.

"They called and said a bullet came through the window," one man said as he picked up his child. "The kids were in the cafeteria, and they were unharmed. So basically everything was good with them, you know."

The parent said the school had no indication of where the bullet came from.

"To me, they said the bullet came through, shattered the glass – made a hole in the glass – but it didn't go far. It landed in there," he said. "So I figured it came from a far distance for it to just come inside there in the classroom."

A child said students in the cafeteria were directed into the hallway and then to classrooms.

The school is located in a quiet residential area.
