NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — Two women were struck in the head with hammers Monday evening in separate incidents near Union Square.

One woman was struck around 7:30 p.m. at 17th Street near Union Square Park, police said. The other was struck around the same time near 44 W. 18th St., police said.

One woman was 28, the other was 30, police said.

The victims’ conditions were not immediately learned, but they were expected to survive.

It was not clear whether the same suspect was believed to be involved in the attacks. No description was available.
