L.I. Officials: 15 Gang Members Arrested In Heroin, Dogfighting Ring

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- A Nassau County drug selling and dogfighting ring has been busted, according to authorities.

Fifteen gang members and their associates were arrested Thursday in connection with the sale of fentanyl-laced heroin, prescription drugs Xanax, Oxycodone and Codeine Promethazine and charges related to dog fighting operations, authorities said.

The suspects are accused of making hundreds of thousands of dollars in dogfighting bets, 1010 WINS' Mona Rivera reported.

"Too many young people have fallen victim to heroin and opioid addiction," said Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano. "I commend all those in law enforcement for helping to take down these drug dealers and remove deadly narcotics from our neighborhoods.  In addition, I would like to thank our officers for helping put a stop to the dogfighting operations and ending the abuse that was being inflicted on the animals involved.  Dogfighting is a heinous and barbaric crime that will not be tolerated."

"After having spent my entire career as a prosecutor advocating for victims, and as a mother of two teenagers myself, I will never let up in the fight to protect families from heroin and gangs," said Acting District Attorney Madeline Singas.

"Search warrants were executed at five locations Freeport and Roosevelt that produced additional evidence of both controlled substances and dogfighting paraphernalia," Singas said.

Eleven dogs were rescued, Rivera reported.

Additional arrests are expected.
