9/11 Museum Sees Nearly 2.7 Million Visitors In First Year

NEW YORK (CBSNewYork/AP) -- National September 11 Memorial and Museum officials say nearly 2.7 million people visited the museum in the first year since it opened at the World Trade Center site.

The visitors have come from all 50 states and more than 150 countries, museum officials said Friday.

"It's been an absolutely meaningful and incredible year," memorial President Joe Daniels told WCBS 880's Rich Lamb.

Dignitaries including President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton attended a dedication ceremony on May 15, 2014.

Former President George W. Bush, as well as Prince William and Kate Middleton also visited the memorial and museum.

"But our most meaningful visits have been from the wounded warrior groups who come back here and we see such a deep connection in their eyes when they look at these memorial pools and go into the museum," Daniels said.

Daniels said the museum's success is a tribute to those who were killed in the Sept. 11, 2001 terror attacks.

Museum officials also are announcing a new exhibit of works by photographer Jonathan C. Hyman. It's called "Beyond Ground Zero: 9/11 and the American Landscape.''

The photos chronicle the ways in which the public paid tribute to victims of the attacks.
